16+ years of helping students excel in Maths.

Hi there! I'm Kysanne, and for over 16 years, I've helped hundreds of Barbadian and UK students build the knowledge, skills and confidence to achieve excellence in Mathematics.

Building success through a proven approach.

In 2010, I started a small Maths tuition business because of my love for the subject and for helping others. I never imagined I would spend most of my life doing what I'm passionate about - but here I am...So let me first say something that as a parent, you may or may not agree with - Maths is not a hard subject. Yes, many students find it challenging - and here's why - the approach. Unfortunately, many students, from the onset of studies in Mathematics, are being set up to perform poorly. They aren't being taught to think independently, but are rather "spoon-fed". This leads to many problems as the student gets older.

In addition, over the years, I have found that a student's success in Mathematics is shaped by three important factors: foundation, practice and consistency. This has led to the development of what I have termed my FPC approach to teaching Mathematics. The aim of this is to provide students with the tools they need to build Foundation, get regular Practice and stay Consistent so that they can achieve real, sustainable progress in Mathematics. This approach has helped many of my students to achieve high grades in their Maths exams.

Foundational Strength

Students with a solid foundation in basic Maths concepts are more likely to understand advanced topics and perform well in Maths.

Practice Frequency

Students who “put in the effort” by completing homework and assignments are more likely to retain concepts and improve.

Consistency

Students who show up consistently to classes, and actively participate are more likely to excel.

Quick results vs real progress.

Now, above I mentioned real, sustainable progress…because a lot of tutoring programs will offer what I like to call “quick results”- quick actions to improve exam performance. Now, this can work for many students…if the goal is simply to achieve an improved score in an exam. However, this type of tutoring can have significant drawbacks:

May improve grades but not ability

A student might score higher on one test but still struggle in the next school year because the underlying understanding hasn't improved.

Increases student dependency

If the tutor is always providing tricks or solutions, students may struggle to solve unfamiliar problems independently.

Does not facilitate long retention

Information learned through memorization or shortcuts is sometimes easily forgotten after an exam because it hasn't been deeply understood.

Treats symptoms over causes

A student may learn how to answer a specific type of question without understanding the underlying concepts. The immediate problem is solved, but the knowledge gaps remain, which then leads to difficulty learning advanced topics.

Encourages a performance mindset

Many students become so focused on exams that they stop learning to think mathematically. Replacing curiosity with shortcuts may improve short-term results, but it rarely builds lasting understanding or confidence.

Progress is often not sustainable

Many students experience an initial improvement in their marks through exam techniques and practice questions, but eventually reach a point where progress stalls because they lack a solid understanding of the underlying concepts.

Taking a holistic approach.

So with all of these drawbacks noted, I think you have guessed by now that I believe in a more holistic approach to tutoring Maths - where my goal isn’t simply to enable students to pass the next test, but also to equip them to tackle future learning with confidence.
Here’s what this looks like:

Diagnosing knowledge gaps before moving ahead.

Encouraging students to explain their thinking.

Building concepts in a logical sequence.

Developing independent problem-solving skills.

Using spaced review to strengthen memory.

Measuring understanding, not just correct answers.

More about me.

Enough about my approach—let’s talk about me. Maths has always been my favourite subject. I’ve always enjoyed how it challenges you to think differently while still being fun and rewarding. This naturally led to strong grades throughout my school years.

In Class 4, I remember spotting an error on a marked test - I had been awarded 98% when it should have been 99%. When I pointed it out, my teacher corrected it and wrote 99% across the paper several times. She was clearly amused (and a little frustrated), but I left proudly satisfied. Even then, I had a strong drive for accuracy and excellence, something I now try to instil in my students by encouraging them to always aim for their personal best.

In secondary school, I achieved a Grade 1 in CXC CSEC Mathematics in my fourth year, and went on to study Maths in sixth form, where I continued to achieve top grades, earning a Barbados Exhibition. I later studied Mathematics and Accounting at university, graduating with Honours.

After university, I started a small Maths tuition business, which gradually expanded as students began requesting support in additional subjects. In 2021, the pandemic led to its closure, and I returned my focus to my first passion - teaching Mathematics. I continued teaching online, working with students in Barbados, the UK and the US.

Eventually, I rebranded the business as Mathful Academy. The name reflects my vision: to help students not only excel in Mathematics, but also transform how they feel about it - moving from “I hate Maths” or “Maths is hard” to the belief that success in Maths is achievable with the right approach.

When I'm not teaching, you'll usually find me writing music or playing guitar - another lifelong passion that allows me to combine my creativity with problem-solving.

What students say.

Here are a few testimonials from some of my students.

Working with "Aunty Kysanne."

Many of my students call me “Aunty Kysanne” - even those who are arguably a little too old for the title. To me, this reflects the comfort they feel in my lessons. That sense of ease is important, because it allows students to ask questions freely and speak up when they don’t understand something.

I believe that building a strong working relationship with each student is essential for helping them achieve their best in Mathematics. When students feel supported and understood, they are far more willing to engage, ask questions, and grow in confidence.

I am also a strong believer in not spoon-feeding answers. Instead of simply giving solutions, I guide students through the thinking process so they can arrive at the answer themselves. My aim is not to create dependence, but to develop independent thinkers who are confident in their own ability to solve problems.

I'm quite easy-going and approachable, however, I do place strong expectations on effort and consistency - students usually only see my firmer side when work has not been completed.

Above all, I am highly committed to student success. I invest significant time and energy into my students’ progress, and I take pride in seeing them grow in both confidence and ability.

What parents say.

I'm not usually one to toot my own horn... but when around 95% of your students come through referrals from other parents, maybe you've earned a little trumpet solo! Here's what some of those parents have had to say.

Thanks to Mathful, my daughter has shown greater understanding of concepts that were proving difficult for her to grasp.

-Sherry-Ann Blackman

Since my daughter started lessons with Mathful Academy, I have noticed a tremendous improvement in not only her mathematical skills but also her confidence.

Due to a learning disability, she does not learn at the same rate as the average child. She often comments on how understanding and patient the tutors are with her and that she prefers their style of teaching. I know that her journey to her mathematical goals may be longer and more difficult than most, but I am confident that she will get there with the help of the tutors at Mathful Academy.

-Samantha Mascoll
Mathful Academy is excellent for children who are having difficulties with understanding the concepts of Maths.

The tutors are knowledgeable, attentive and current in their teaching methods. The concept of the small groups makes teaching and learning much easier. Mathful Academy is one of the BEST academic decisions you will make for your family.

Finding the right fit.

Finding the right tutor for your child isn't always easy. Every student learns differently, and while I've successfully worked with a wide range of learners over the years, no teaching approach is the perfect fit for everyone. To help you decide whether I'm the right tutor for your child, here's who is most likely to benefit from the way I teach.

Students who want to understand Mathematics rather than simply memorise methods.

Students who are ready to commit to the learning process.

Students who are open to feedback and eager to take the steps necessary to improve.

Students who value a structured, step-by-step approach to learning.

Students who are willing to put in consistent effort both during and between lessons.

Students who are ready to take an active role in their own success.

Success in Mathematics isn't about being naturally gifted—it's about building strong foundations, thinking critically, and practising consistently. That's why I work best with students who are committed to the learning process and willing to trust the journey.

A roadmap to Maths success.

Ready to get started? Here's how it works.

1. Assessment

We'll start off with an initial Maths assessment. This is an online test which allows me to identify the student's weak areas and knowledge gaps.

2. Feedback

Following this, I'll provide feedback outlining current strengths, areas for improvement, and recommended next steps.

3. Roadmap

If we decide to work together, I'll create a personalised learning plan that provides a clear roadmap to success in Mathematics.

Personalised support. Collaborative Learning.

Where appropriate and when a suitable group is available, a student's personalised learning plan may include a combination of one-to-one tutoring and small group lessons - allowing students to benefit from individual support as well as collaborative learning.

Small Group Sessions

A small group of 3 - 7 students focused on developing understanding through guided teaching and practice.

Classes are typically held at least twice a week, with each session lasting between 60 and 90 minutes.

1-on-1 Sessions

Individual sessions are designed around the student's specific needs, goals, and learning pace.

Session length & frequency is based on the student's requirements and can be adjusted as the student progresses.

All lessons are delivered online, giving students the flexibility to learn from anywhere while receiving the same high-quality, interactive teaching experience.

An investment. Not an expense.

Quality tutoring is an investment in a student's future. It builds confidence, develops independent thinking, strengthens problem-solving skills, and fosters a deep, lasting understanding of Mathematics - benefits that extend far beyond the next test or exam.

Because every student has different goals, strengths, and learning needs, there is no one-size-fits-all programme. Following the initial assessment, I recommend the level of support that will provide the greatest opportunity for meaningful, long-term progress in Mathematics. You are under no obligation to proceed with tutoring following the assessment.
